Sartor resartus; the life and opinions of Herr Teufelsdröckh
Thomas Carlyle's 1833 satire on clothes and philosophy, reissued in 1893 by Frederick A. Stokes in New York for general American readers, with plates signed E. S. Tucker. The drawings are loose charcoal and wash studies of solitary figures — a bearded man at a canvas, a beggar in torn cloak and gaiters, an old woman in a bonnet, a figure pulling back drapery — printed in soft grey halftone with smudged shading and vignetted edges.
