Meister Stephans Schachbuch. Ein mittelniederdeutsches Gedicht des vierzehnten Jahrhunderts. Theil I: Text
A scholarly edition of Meister Stephan's fourteenth-century Middle Low German didactic poem on chess, edited by Wolfgang Schlüter and published in Norden and Leipzig in 1889 for philologists and chess historians. The plates reproduce early woodcuts of the pawns as tradesmen — a labourer with spade and staff, a keeper of keys and money bag, a man with balance and measuring rod, a physician with a flask — each a single figure on a hatched ground inside a ruled border with a plate number above; usable as outline figure stock, occupational emblems, or framing devices.
