The school printshop
A 1919 instructional manual by Katharine Marian Stilwell, published in Chicago and New York by Rand, McNally & Company, teaching printing to schoolchildren and their teachers in classroom print shops. The 72 figures are spare line diagrams and solid black shapes: ruled-line layout exercises, folded and numbered signatures with arrows and handwritten labels, galleys and imposing stones in perspective, and rows of heavy vertical bars useful as abstract pattern or rhythm studies.
