Schoonhoven, Florens, 1594-1648, Passe, Crispijn van de, d. 1670 · 1618 · Goudae, Apud Andream Burier · 77 pictures

Florens Schoonhoven's Latin emblem book, printed at Gouda by Andreas Burier in 1618 with engravings by Crispijn van de Passe, pairing moral and civil mottoes with verse commentary for educated readers. The small oblong plates set one or two figures — a traveller in boots and cap, nude allegorical men, a corpse picked at by birds — in wooded or wintry landscapes with hilltop ruins, snakes underfoot and densely hatched foliage, useful for stock landscape backgrounds, tree silhouettes and compact figure-in-scene vignettes.
