Scientific American, Vol. 9, No. 5 (August 1863)
An August 1863 issue of Scientific American, the weekly patent and mechanics' journal published by Munn & Co. in New York for inventors, machinists and manufacturers. Its wood engravings show patented devices in isolation on blank ground — clock escapements and pendulum bobs, a sectioned gas-lamp fixture, a woman winding yarn on a wooden swift — each part lettered for reference and modelled in fine hatching, useful as cutout machine parts and figure-with-apparatus vignettes.
