An issue of Scientific American, the weekly New York patent and invention journal published by Munn & Co. in September 1863 for inventors, machinists and manufacturers. The wood engravings are small technical figures — sectioned machine parts, a coil-wound magneto viewed end-on, a hand gripping pliers — with hatched shading, lettered part keys and "Fig." labels usable as diagram fragments or cutaway motifs.
