Scientific American, Vol. 24, No. 3 (January 1871)
An issue of the weekly New York periodical Scientific American, published by Munn & Co. in January 1871 for inventors, patent applicants, mechanics and manufacturers. The wood engravings show machines in three-quarter view and cutaway section — a battery of plates in its case with lettered reference keys, a flywheel press, a cast-iron sewing machine stand, a vertical boiler with the maker's name cast into the base — drawn in dense hatching against blank ground, useful as isolated machine silhouettes, ornamental cast-iron legs, or lettered diagram parts.
