A multi-volume Florentine biographical dictionary of painters, sculptors and architects, printed by Gaetano Cambiagi for the Grand Duke's press in 1769, with copperplate portraits cut by Sante Pacini, Giovanni Battista Cecchi and others for Italian collectors and students of art history. The plates are half-length portraits in fine engraved line and cross-hatching, each artist set against a ruled or hatched ground in collar, cloak or smock, sometimes holding brushes, palette or paper, giving designers a consistent set of head-and-shoulders figures, drapery textures and flat tonal backgrounds to cut out or reuse.
