A multi-volume Italian biographical series on the most celebrated painters, sculptors and architects, printed in Florence in 1769 by Gaetano Cambiagi's royal press with eulogies and copperplate portraits engraved by Sante Pacini, Giovanni Battista Cecchi and others for connoisseurs and collectors. The plates are bust-length portraits in line engraving, each figure turned three-quarters against a flatly hatched ground, with curling periwigs, lace cravats and heavy drapery rendered in fine parallel strokes—usable as period heads, cut-out silhouettes, or samples of engraved shading texture.
