Sesame & lilies, The two paths, & The king of the golden river

Ruskin, John, 1819-1900 · 1909 · London, J. M. Dent & co.; New York, E. P. Dutton & co · 35 pictures

A 1909 Dent and Dutton reprint gathering three of John Ruskin's lectures and essays on education, art and labour with his 1851 fairy tale The King of the Golden River, issued in London and New York for general readers. The line-block wood engravings, after Richard Doyle's designs for the tale, mix cramped kitchen and smithy scenes of quarrelling brothers with bare studies of alpine crags and a decorative initial wreathed in ivy, giving designers small figure vignettes, rock hatching and open-hatched backgrounds.
