Seven centuries of lace
A history of European lace by Maria Margaret Pollen, published in London by Heinemann in 1908 for collectors, needleworkers and museum students. Photographic plates show lace fragments and borders laid on black grounds, so white thread patterns read as high-contrast silhouettes: geometric bobbin bands, scrolling needlepoint, scalloped flounces and sprigged net usable as ornament, lettering texture or repeating edge motifs.
