The seven lamps of architecture
John Ruskin's architectural treatise, first issued in 1849 and reprinted here by George Allen at Sunnyside, Orpington, in 1883, for British readers of criticism and design theory. The plates are Ruskin's own etchings of Gothic detail from Italian and French churches, combining several studies per sheet: cusped arches, foliate capitals, window tracery, pierced spandrels and diaper patterns, drawn in dense cross-hatching with deep blacks and reserved white highlights.
