A survey of Western monasticism written by American Baptist minister Alfred Wesley Wishart and published in Trenton, New Jersey, in 1900 for general and church readers. Illustrations are halftone and engraved portraits of founders and saints in habit, cowl and biretta, a photographed devotional painting of a monk before a crucifix, and a woodcut tree emblem framing an open book with Latin motto.
