Side glimpses from the colonial meeting-house
A popular history of New England Puritan church life — witchcraft trials, slavery, and meeting-house customs — written by William Root Bliss and published by Houghton, Mifflin in 1894 for general American readers. The illustrations are chiefly horizontal woodcut headbands and tailpieces in a revived Renaissance manner: white foliage, roses, long-necked birds and hooded grotesque figures reserved against dense black stippled grounds, useful as rules, chapter dividers and masthead ornament.
