The sidereal messenger of Galileo Galilei and a part of the preface to Kepler's Dioptrics containing the original account of Galileo's astronomical discoveries
Edward Stafford Carlos's 1880 English translation of Galileo's Sidereus Nuncius, with part of Kepler's Dioptrics preface, published in London by Rivingtons for astronomers and classical scholars. The plates are line diagrams in thin pen strokes on toned paper: concentric orbital circles, epicycles with arrowed motion, and lettered sight-lines from an observer's eye, usable as geometric schematics or abstract circle-and-tangent motifs.
