An 1880 London edition from Rivingtons of Galileo's Sidereal Messenger with part of Kepler's Dioptrics preface, translated and annotated by Edward Stafford Carlos for English readers of astronomy. The plates are spare line diagrams: concentric orbital circles with lettered points, sight lines and tangents, epicycle loops and arrows marking direction of motion, usable as geometric ornament or schematic framing.
