A Latin treatise on heraldic devices and imprese by the Jesuit Silvestro Pietrasanta, first issued in Antwerp and reprinted in Amsterdam in 1682, with plates engraved by Cornelis Galle after designs associated with Rubens, addressed to scholars and noble families interested in mottoes and emblems. Each plate is a copperplate cartouche of scrolled strapwork, grotesque masks and shells framing a small landscape or object scene with a lettered motto ribbon, giving designers ready-made frames, banners, engraved hatching skies and compact symbolic vignettes.
