The first issue of Outdoor Life, a hunting, fishing and camping monthly launched in 1898 for American sportsmen in the Rocky Mountain West, reproduced here from microfilm. Coarse, heavily inked halftones of amateur photographs give moonlit tent camps, a trapper spreading moose antlers, crowds on a timber trestle, and two-column text pages usable as high-contrast grain and silhouette.
