Siris : a chain of philosophical reflexions and inquiries concerning the virtues of tar water, and divers other subjects connected together and arising one from another
George Berkeley's 1744 treatise on the medicinal virtues of tar water, ranging into alchemy and Neoplatonic speculation, printed in Dublin by Margaret Rhames for R. Gunne and addressed to learned readers. The illustrations are worn letterpress woodcut ornaments: horizontal headpiece bands with a radiant sun face, putti and foliate scrolls, plus a flower-filled basket tailpiece — coarse, high-contrast stock printers' cuts usable as rules, dividers and spot motifs.
