Sir Joshua Reynolds's discourses on art
Sir Joshua Reynolds's lectures to Royal Academy students, first delivered in London between 1769 and 1790, reissued in 1891 by A.C. McClurg of Chicago in an edition edited by Edward Gilpin Johnson for general readers and art students. The plates are halftone reproductions of Reynolds's society portraits — women in plumed hats, sashed gowns and dark wraps posed against trees, drapery and open sky — useful for eighteenth-century dress detail, soft tonal backgrounds and standing three-quarter poses.
