Sir Joshua Reynold's Discourses;
An 1891 Chicago edition of Sir Joshua Reynolds's Royal Academy lectures on painting, edited with a biographical introduction by Edward Gilpin Johnson for American art students and general readers. The 21 plates are halftone reproductions after Reynolds's portraits: half-length and standing women in silk gowns, plumed hats and pearls, set against dark foliage, stone plinths and drapery, useful for soft tonal vignettes and eighteenth-century costume detail.
