Emblemata, sive Symbola : a Principibus, viris Eeclesiasticis, ac Militaribus, alijsque vsurpanda = Deuises, ou, Emblemes : pour Princes, gens d'Eglise, gens de guerre, & aultres
An emblem book compiled by the Antwerp painter Otto van Veen and printed in Brussels in 1624 by Hubert Antoine, with paired Latin and French titles offering devices for princes, churchmen, soldiers and others. The plates are grids of small numbered circular engravings, each captioned with a motto, holding isolated objects on plain or hatched grounds — hourglasses, caduceus, sun and crescent, clasped hands, swords, tortoises, open books, eyes among trees — usable as spot symbols, icon sets or mottoed roundels.
