Some successful Americans
Sherman Williams's collection of short biographies of American presidents, statesmen, inventors and philanthropists, published by Ginn & Company in Boston in 1904 as a school reader. Halftone plates reproduce studio portraits of elderly men in dark coats and white stocks alongside photographs of birthplaces and homesteads — clapboard houses, picket fences, tree-shaded drives — useful for coarse-grained grey tone and vignetted foliage framing.
