Sound [electronic resource]
John Tyndall's Sound, published by Appleton in New York in 1867, sets out his Royal Institution lectures on acoustics for general readers and students. Wood-engraved figures show laboratory apparatus in outline and light shading — tuning forks struck by hand, gas flames forking into smoky tips under a whistle, a siren disc in a mounted wooden block, tubes and resonance jars — usable as instrument silhouettes, flame shapes and mechanical detail.
