Specimens
A specimen album issued in 1877 by the U.S. Treasury's Bureau of Engraving and Printing, showing the bureau's stock of steel-engraved portrait vignettes of statesmen and presidents for banknote and bond work. The 153 plates are head-and-shoulders portraits built from ruled and stippled line, most set in oval frames with laurel sprays, blank corners and engraver's signatures, useful for currency-style lettering surrounds, vignette borders and line-engraved skin and cloth texture.
