Speculum imaginum veritatis occultæ : exhibens symbola, emblemata, hieroglyphica, ænigmata, omnitam materiæ, quam formæ varietate; exemplis simul, ac præceptis illustratum
A Latin handbook of emblems, symbolic images, hieroglyphs and riddles compiled by the Jesuit rhetorician Jakob Masen and printed at Cologne in 1681 by the widow and heirs of Johann Anton Kinckius, addressed to preachers, poets and other makers of learned imagery. The scanned pictures are printer's ornaments: heavy black woodcut tailpieces of scrolled strapwork with grotesque masks, lion heads and dolphins, plus foliate initial letters, all worn and ink-heavy on toned paper, useful as spot ornament, drop caps and section breaks.
