The sports and pastimes of the people of England : Including the rural and domestic recreations, May games, mummeries, shows, processions, pageants, and pompous spectacles, from the earliest period to the present time
Joseph Strutt's antiquarian survey of English games, sports, May games, mummeries and pageants, first issued in the 1800s and reprinted by T. Tegg in London in 1845 for readers of popular history. The woodcuts copy figures from medieval manuscripts: players with balls, clubs and staves, tumblers, wrestlers and jugglers, drawn in outline on bare ground with no background, easy to cut out as silhouettes or spot figures.
