The present state of Peru : comprising its geography, topography, natural history, mineralogy, commerce, the customs and manners of its inhabitants, the state of literature, philosophy, and the arts, the modern travels of the missionaries in the heretofore unexplored mountainous territories, &c. &c.
A London compilation of 1805, assembled by Joseph Skinner for publisher Richard Phillips, describing Peru's geography, natural history, commerce and inhabitants for British readers curious about Spanish America. Twenty hand-coloured plates show single figures in local dress — bell-shaped striped skirts, embroidered waistcoats, wide straw hats, plumed headdresses — isolated on blank grounds with cast shadows, usable as cut-out costume silhouettes and colour references.
