The æsthetic attitude
A 1920 study of aesthetic experience by Harvard psychologist Herbert Sidney Langfeld, published in New York by Harcourt, Brace and Howe for students of psychology and art theory. The plates are halftone reproductions of Italian Renaissance and Baroque paintings, mostly enthroned Madonnas flanked by saints, chosen to demonstrate symmetry, balance and pyramidal grouping, giving designers ready-made diagrams of centred composition alongside architectural niches, haloed figures and draped attendants.
