A Dutch emblem book of 57 moralizing plates on virtues and vices, designed by the painter and engraver Arnold Houbraken with verses by Gezine Brit, published in Amsterdam by the heirs of F. Houttuyn in 1767 for readers seeking pious instruction. Each engraving sets a small landscape scene in a tondo framed by a wavy-hatched square border: lone trees, rocky crags, ruins, rayed suns and a few gesturing figures, all in fine open line that scales well as a roundel, vignette or repeating frame motif.
