Houbraken, Arnold, 1660-1719, Brit, Gezine, fl. 1698-1723, Folkema, Jacob, 1692-1767 · 1767 · Amsterdam, De erven van F. Houttuyn · 59 pictures

A Dutch emblem book of moralizing pictures on virtues and vices, engraved by Jacob Folkema after Arnold Houbraken with verses by Gezine Brit, issued in Amsterdam in 1767 by the heirs of F. Houttuyn for a pious reading public. The 60 plates are small circular scenes set in plain rings with wavy hatched borders: single figures in landscapes with trees, rivers, ruins and distant towers, pointing, kneeling or drinking at a stream, all built from fine parallel line and cross-hatching that a designer can lift as roundel frames, silhouetted foliage or stock landscape backgrounds.
