Alois Riegl's 1893 art-historical treatise, published in Berlin by G. Siemens, traces the development of ornament from Egyptian and Greek to Islamic sources for scholars and students of decorative art. The 143 line engravings isolate single motifs and running borders—palmettes, acanthus scrolls, tendril bands, spandrel fillings—as flat black-and-white outlines, usable as vector-ready repeat patterns and corner pieces.
