Alois Riegl's 1893 art-historical treatise, published in Berlin by G. Siemens, tracing the development of plant ornament from Egyptian and Greek sources through Roman and Islamic work for scholars and design students. The 137 line engravings and woodcuts isolate single motifs — palmettes, lotus buds, spiral tendrils, acanthus friezes, carved capitals — as flat black-and-white diagrams usable as repeat patterns, border rules, or vector tracing stock.
