The stones of Venice
John Ruskin's study of Venetian Gothic architecture and its moral and craft basis, written for British readers and issued here in an American edition by Estes and Lauriat of Boston in 1851, with plates engraved from Ruskin's own measured drawings. The plates shown are numbered grids of moulding, cornice and base profiles rendered as soft-shaded silhouettes on cream grounds, giving designers a stock of curved section shapes, bracket and cap outlines, and ready-made specimen-chart layouts.
