Studio international

1893 · London, Cory, Adams & Mackay [etc.] · 303 pictures

Studio International, an illustrated art periodical begun in London in 1893 for artists, designers and collectors, reproducing contemporary painting, etching and applied design. The plates here are halftone and photogravure reproductions of tonal landscapes and etched harbour and city views, heavy with soft grey wash, smudged foliage massing and fine needle lines describing towers and waterfronts against blank sky — useful for atmospheric backgrounds, silhouetted skylines and grainy monochrome texture.
