Symbola heroica
Claude Paradin's collection of heroic devices, expanded by Gabriele Simeoni and printed in Latin by Christopher Plantin at Antwerp in 1583 for humanist readers and users of heraldic imblems. The 213 small woodcuts show single objects and emblematic scenes against blank grounds — clouds with emerging hands, trophies of armour and anchors, banderoles carrying mottoes, torches, serpents and plant sprays — usable as isolated symbols, spot motifs, or motto-ribbon devices.
