Symbola heroica
A Latin emblem treatise by the Jesuit Silvestro Pietrasanta, first issued in the 1630s and reprinted at Amsterdam in 1682 for scholars and heraldic compilers cataloguing devices of the Carafa and other noble families. Each engraving sets a motto scroll and small scene — sun, sundial, sea, sprouting plant — inside a strapwork cartouche with grotesque masks, volutes and leaf tips.
