The symbolisms of heraldry : or, A treatise on the meanings and derivations of armorial bearings
A late-Victorian handbook on the meanings and origins of armorial bearings, written by William Cecil Wade and published by George Redway in London in 1898 for antiquaries, students of heraldry and armigerous families. Line engravings show shields, charges and crests — leaping stags, an eagle with spear, a pelican feeding its young in the nest, blank escutcheons with fleur-de-lis corners and a flowering vine border — usable as clean black-on-white emblems and frames.
