Syria

Beirut. Institut français d'archéologie · 1920 · Paris P. Geuthner · 175 pictures

Syria is a French archaeological journal begun in 1920 by the Institut français d'archéologie in Beirut and issued in Paris by Paul Geuthner for scholars of Near Eastern art, epigraphy and excavation. The plates pair halftone photographs of carved stone and stucco with measured pen drawings of inscription bands, giving designers Kufic letterforms, scrolling arabesque fills, weathered capital fragments and grid-like registers of epigraphy to trace or adapt.
