A system of magic

Defoe, Daniel, 1661?-1731 · 1840 · Oxford : Printed by D.A. Talboys, for T. Tegg · 1 picture

A 19th-century Oxford reprint of Daniel Defoe's prose treatise on magic and conjuring, printed by D.A. Talboys for the London bookseller Thomas Tegg in 1840 and later held by the Boston Public Library. The single plate is the library's engraved bookplate: two nude youths flanking an oval cartouche with an open book and Roman dates, framed by laurel swags, flaming torches and a banner motto, useful for ownership marks, cartouche frames and classical figure borders.
