A Dutch emblem handbook of 1722, printed in Amsterdam by Gerard Onder de Linden, adapting Cesare Ripa, Pierius Valerianus and Horapollo into personifications of virtues, vices, passions, divine punishments and blessings for Netherlandish readers and artists. The numbered copperplate engravings show single draped women standing in ruled rectangular frames, holding scrolls, branches, palms and broken weapons, with lions, serpents and trampled armour at their feet, offering ready-made allegorical figures, attribute vocabulary and small captioned banderoles.
