A tangled tale
Lewis Carroll's collection of ten mathematical puzzle stories, issued as a book by Macmillan in London in 1885 after serial publication, with wood-engraved illustrations by the American humorist Arthur Burdett Frost for puzzle-solving readers. Frost's line drawings put comic figures in odd predicaments — a top-hatted man wading with a measuring pole, a scaly monster among scattered books, sailors on deck, turbaned travellers — usable as character vignettes and spot art.
