Teatro d'imprese
An Italian emblem book, Giovanni Ferro's Teatro d'imprese, printed by Giacomo Sarzina in Venice in 1623 as a reference work on devices and mottoes for courtiers, heralds and writers. The images run to hundreds of small woodcut emblems and a repeating stock of decorated initials, in which a hatched letter sits inside a ruled square filled with vine scrolls, leaves and flower buds, useful as drop caps, borders and compact black-and-white ornament.
