The testimony of the catacombs and of other monuments of Christian art : from the second to the eighteenth century, concerning questions of doctrine now disupted in the Church

Marriott, Wharton Booth, 1823-1871 · 1870 · London : Hatchards · 23 pictures

A polemical study of early Christian art by Wharton Booth Marriott, published in London by Hatchards in 1870, arguing doctrinal points from catacomb paintings, mosaics, ivories and sarcophagi for Anglican clergy and controversialists. The plates are line and tone reproductions of carved relief panels, apse mosaics with Greek and Latin inscriptions, and enthroned or standing haloed figures in heavy drapery, useful for Byzantine figure outlines, lettering on scrolls, and framed architectural borders.
