Teutonic mythology
Jacob Grimm's survey of Germanic and Norse gods, magic, and superstition, translated by James Steven Stallybrass and issued in London by W. Swan Sonnenschein & Allen in 1880 for philologists and folklore scholars. The plates here are not mythological scenes but printer's furniture: a line-engraved University of California bookplate with an open book and bear seal inside a stepped border, and a symmetrical caduceus headpiece of winged staff, twined serpents, scrolling foliage and stippled ground, useful as rule-and-frame devices or chapter ornaments.
