An essay on the theory of painting
Jonathan Richardson's treatise on the theory of painting, printed in London in 1725 for connoisseurs, collectors and practising artists in the English art world. The plates here are chiefly typographic: italic letterpress tables linking painters to their masters and disciples, held together by large curly braces, plus a woodcut headpiece of a displayed eagle set in foliate scrollwork — useful for period type specimens, bracket forms and small relief ornaments.
