Tombs in and near Rome ; Sculpture among the Greeks and Romans, mythology in funereal sculpture, and early Christian sculpture
An 1877 archaeological survey by John Henry Parker, published in Oxford and London, documenting Roman tombs and the classical, mythological, and early Christian sculpture found on them, aimed at antiquarians and students of art history. The plates are photographs of carved sarcophagus fronts in raking light: crowded relief friezes of hunts, biblical scenes, and strigil fluting, useful as dense figure-band borders and stone texture.
