Richard Haydock's 1598 English translation of Giovanni Paolo Lomazzo's treatise on painting, carving and building, printed at Oxford by Joseph Barnes for readers among English artists, gentlemen patrons and antiquaries. The illustrations are letterpress woodcut border strips and headbands of dense black-and-white arabesque scrollwork and quatrefoil lattice, usable as repeating rules, frame edges and tileable background patterns.
