Training for the trenches; a book of humorous cartoons on a serious subject
A 1917 album of army-camp cartoons by Alban B. Butler, an American soldier-artist, issued in New York for troops training for service in France and for readers at home. Sparse pen-and-ink line drawings fill each sheet with several panels or a scattered crowd scene: recruits in campaign hats and puttees drilling, shaving, hauling garbage cans, sprawling on the grass, plus tents, mess tables, dogs and a hand-lettered speech balloon; useful for loose comic figure work, uncluttered outline groups and open-field vignettes.
