The first French edition of Leonardo da Vinci's treatise on painting, translated by Roland Fréart de Chambray and printed in Paris by Jacques Langlois in 1651 for painters, students and art collectors. Each plate sets a small engraved demonstration — a column casting shadow in a vaulted niche, sight-lines converging to a point, a pointing arm scored with measuring arcs — inside a wide ruled border of beaded and leaf ornament, giving usable framing devices alongside spare geometric line figures.
